About this course

This training program provides mental health professionals with the essential skills for effective grief-informed care. Participants will learn about grief types, essential assessment tools, and how to tailor interventions to meet individual needs across developmental stages, cultures, and life situations. The program also covers factors influencing grief and current grief models, including prolonged grief disorder. Key topics include conducting thorough intake assessments with attention to multicultural and spiritual aspects, applying strategies from case studies, and understanding the challenges of managing a client's death and personal loss. Ethical considerations for maintaining professional boundaries will also be addressed. The program concludes with a reflective ritual to reinforce learning and foster a deeper understanding of grief. This training equips therapists to better support grieving clients and navigate their own experiences with loss. Please note: participants will be watching a recorded video.

Learning Objectives

Identify different types of grief, including acute, complicated, anticipatory, disenfranchised, and cumulative grief.
Demonstrate effective intake assessment techniques to evaluate grief intensity, depression risk, and potential suicidal ideation.
Design personalized treatment plans considering clients’ developmental stages, cultural backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs.
Identify and apply therapeutic interventions that address each type of grief.
Analyze the potential challenges and benefits of therapists exploring their own grief experiences
Explain the emotional and professional impacts of client death on therapists.

Kelly Daugherty, a seasoned social worker with over two decades in the clinical field, is a Fellow in Thanatology, specializing in death, dying, and bereavement. Anchored in Malta, NY, she owns Greater Life Grief Counseling, LCSW, and the Center for Informed Grief, LLC. Kelly co-owns Healing Strides, LLC, where emotional and physical well-being intersects in a unique 7-week program for grieving women. Kelly is also a contributing author of "Holistic Mental Health" and "Brave Kids," and lead author in the collaborative book "The Grief Experience: Tools for Acceptance, Resilience and Connection" set to release in February. She is dedicated to revolutionizing grief support by offering tools and insights to individuals and professionals alike.
