Parenting Marriage: A Cutting-Edge Alternative for Clients When Divorce with Kids Seems Inevitable

CE Hours 3

About this course

The course will discuss the dilemma couples with kids face when the romantic connection in their relationship has ended. Many couples split at this point or fall into a default parenting marriage. Neither of these options feels good to most people. A Parenting Marriage is not necessarily a new concept but the idea of embracing this model is only now being accepted by our society. This class will help therapists understand who a Parenting Marriage works best for, who it will not work for, what couples need to put into place for a successful transition, and how to deal with more complex issues such as dating. Detailed Handout and Workbook are included. Please note: participants will be watching a recorded video.

Learning Objectives

  • identify 5 keys for making a Parenting Marriage work.
  • contrast 5 differences between a Parenting Marriage and Traditional Marriage.
  • discuss 10 reasons why couples are choosing to stay together for the kids rather than divorce.
  • demonstrate how to introduce clients who are contemplating divorce to the option of maintaining a platonic relationship instead of getting a divorce.
  • list 3 kinds of couples who might bring emotional harm to children by staying together rather than divorcing.
